Deng Chinese character — the concept behind CLIMB

CLIMB

This original art IP series is inspired by my pet name "Deng", which derives from the Chinese character meaning "to climb, to ascend, and to forge ahead". It embodies the persistent spirit of upward growth, continuous progress and self-transcendence.

working process

Complete CLIMB sketching, drawing and gold-leaf working process collage

This art IP series merges traditional Chinese New Year painting aesthetics with intangible heritage gold foil craftsmanship, reinterpreting classic folk art through modern visual poster design. Centered on the meaning of "Deng (ascension)", the creation pursues constant self-breakthrough and artistic innovation, representing a continuous exploration and upgrading of personal artistic identity.

Horse-Year Gold-Leaf Illustration

Complete Horse-Year collage: original sketch, painting and gold-leaf process, and framed display concept
Sketch, working process and display concept

This design borrows from traditional gold-leaf painting and Chinese New Year pictures. I brought all the elements together digitally so the image tells more of a story and carries a blessing.

Along with blending colors, I used stippling to highlight the key parts — a choice I made on purpose. The result is quite decorative.

Scorched Rock-Pigment Painting

Three complete framed scorched mineral-pigment artworks
Composition sketches and early rock-pigment painting process
Complete painting and surface scorching process collage

This piece draws on the Dunhuang murals. I started from their figures and palette, then re-composed and redrew everything in my own way. Once it was done, I scorched parts of the surface to give it an old, weathered feel. Every section tells a different story, and the piece has its own originality.

Complete illuminated ridge-beast accordion booklet and its display setting

Material:pencil, liner pen, craft knife, cardstock booklet, gold leaf Creation time:September 2025

Ridge beasts are among the most recognizable elements of Chinese architecture — decorative, and thought to bring good luck. I redesigned them on cardstock and built the booklet so light can pass through the paper, which gives the images a three-dimensional feel.

Pyrography on a Gourd

Photoshop, gourd, pyrography pen February 2025

Complete gourd pyrography references, working process and finished views

Pyrography is a traditional Chinese intangible heritage craft, and its results look like nothing else. The image is built from different temperatures, angles, and burn times, which made the project risky and slow. It took real patience and care. Since the gourd's surface is smooth and curved, I had to watch the pressure and timing very closely when transferring the design. It also stretched my spatial imagination.

Copper-Wire Cloisonné Painting

material : WANGYI AI, copper wire, colored sand, glue, foam board August 2025

Complete copper-wire cloisonné design, wire shaping, colored sand and finished painting collage

Cloisonné painting is part of China's intangible cultural heritage. calls for two skills at once — shaping the copper wire and filling in the color — so it took real patience and a good eye for layout. I combined AI image generation with my own ideas: I designed the image first, traced the outlines with copper wire, filled the shapes with colored sand, and sealed it all with glue.

Chinese Round Fan and Pattern Design

xuan-paper round fan, liner pen May 2024

Complete traditional motifs, drawing process and both sides of the round fan

The round fan carries real weight in Jiangnan culture — a hand-held object that is both useful and beautiful. For this project I drew traditional Chinese patterns on both sides of the fan. By rearranging and repositioning the motifs, I gave the fan a richer, more pleasing look.

Collage

acrylic markers, cardstock, watercolor October 2024

Complete Ferris wheel collage process and green patterned finished artwork

This is a multi-material piece built around a Ferris wheel. I took a real scene and re-created it through collage and pattern work. The image feels story-like and a bit romantic, and it works well as a decorative piece.
